Colorado Snap Income Limits - COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. () -- A Colorado Springs family is struggling to stay afloat after the state sent them a bill to repay thousands of dollars in food aid they received during the violence.

"We'll be in line at food banks with other people, where we've never been," said the mother from Colorado Springs.

The family, distraught over losing their jobs and needing help, asked not to be identified.

Food Stamps 2022: What Is The Income Limit To Qualify For This Benefit?

Her husband lost his job due to the COVID-19 shutdown and immediately applied for unemployment and food assistance. The family started receiving benefits in May. The federal government has approved an additional $600 per week in unemployment benefits. Those temporary federal emergency benefits put the family over the income limit for food benefits, but they didn't know it.

"Now after four months, they say, 'Wow, because we gave you the money you needed, you have to pay for the food you used to get because you put it in a different salary,'" he said.

The state billed them more than $2,500 for all the food aid they received from June through September.

"I can only imagine how many families are in dire straits and will get a notice when they reapply. They say, 'Oh, you have to give this back,'" she said.

About 61,000 El Paso County residents are eligible to receive an additional $600 per week in unemployment benefits, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

From May to August of this year, nearly 40,000 families in El Paso County collected food benefits known as SNAP.

We have forwarded the family's concerns to Karen Logan, Director of Economics and Human Resources.

"Anytime there's a family or a family member applying for their food benefits, it's sad. Because we know they wouldn't be applying with us if they didn't really need it," Logan said.

Logan said changes in income can affect SNAP eligibility. That's why DHS advises those receiving benefits to immediately review any changes in their financial situation.

We asked whether DHS should have warned families more widely that temporary unemployment benefits could make them ineligible for food assistance.

"I won't be able to answer even if they had to come out and say, we should have known that, X, I and Z." There are so many unknowns going on during COVID that it's been really hard to get a handle on what's going to happen," Logan said.

DHS could not count how many people may have been contacted about temporary unemployment benefits in El Paso County, but a spokeswoman said they want anyone who finds themselves in this situation to come forward.

Emergency Snap Benefits Extended For December 2022

DHS officials said people can set up payment plans or allow DHS to take a percentage of what is owed from the family's current SNAP benefits.

After getting involved, DHS contacted the family we spoke to and has already disbursed over $600 from that account which they received in return for $2,500.
