Germany needs an available fifth-generation aircraft to replace its fleet of Tornado fighter-bombers by 2025, the air force's chief of staff said on Wednesday (8 November).

Luftwaffe General Karl Muellner told Reuters the timeframe did not allow enough time to develop a single solution to facilitate a smooth transition from the Tornado, which will retire around 2030.

According to Muellner, the replacement for the German 85 Tornado multirole aircraft "must be noticeably low and capable of identifying and hitting long-range targets."
"It has to be a fifth-generation aircraft to meet our needs," Muellner said.
Last month, the Luftwaffe issued a formal request for information on the F-35, F-15 and F/A-18E/F, as well as the European Eurofighter Typhoon.
