As David Baker explains in his book The Fifth Generation Fighter, fighter jets have sought the element of surprise since the early days of air combat, where the sun was often used to conceal the presence of an attacker when targeting an intended victim. During World War II, German laboratories carried out work on radar and evasion techniques that were kept very secret. After the surrender of Germany, when the victorious Allies wanted to obtain as much of this work as possible for their own use, some ideas were studied and analyzed through the data and results of extensive research and trials carried out until the end of the war. . One was a combination of the flying wing design concept and Low Observability (LO) technology.
Some of the claims made by the German designers were pure myths, while other methods had unwittingly hidden features. An example was the Horten Ho 229, designed by Reimar and Walter Horten, proponents of tailless "flying wing" designs, and built by the Gotha factory in 1944. The German Air Ministry required an explosive capable of carrying a 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) bomb. distance 1000 km (620 ml) 1000 km/h (620 mph). Only by reducing the cruise power, the Horten brothers said, could this requirement be met. This would simply be achieved by significantly reducing drag by creating a hybrid wing/body shape powered by jet engines located at the root of the wing/fuselage. The Horten brothers were right to choose this design concept for minimal drag, and the aircraft was certainly less visible to radar than a conventional aircraft of this size. There were no sharp angles between the wing and the fuselage, no large vertical tail feathers that would reflect radio waves, and no propellers that would appear as bright discs on the radar screen. However, the reality of it is lost in confusion, confusion, lies and finger-pointing.
After the war, German scientists, engineers, technicians, and workers were ready to blame those no longer living (usually in the highest political and military positions of the Third Reich) for missed opportunities, grossly ineffective decision-making, or deliberate mismanagement; these men were also quick to claim that they knew of an application that was only revealed when Allied brains merged with those of German research facilities to discover subtle abilities such as shape-shifting to effectively create a more stealthy design.
